Tarragona’s citizens have always been committed to the defence and promotion of human rights, as well as to the fight to eradicate social injustices and for solidarity. The Municipal Council for International Cooperation and Solidarity was constituted in 1996 as a unifying body that works for the promotion of cooperation and solidarity dynamics in the city.
In 2000, Tarragona City Council adhered to the European Charter for the Safeguarding of Human Rights in the City, which proclaims public freedoms and fundamental rights recognized to inhabitants of towns and cities, that is to say, to each person who lives in a town. In 2016 Tarragona joined the programme “Cities Friends of Childhood” with the will of promoting the application of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in the local sphere and of promoting networking between different towns that are part of this initiative.
The Cooperation Department of Tarragona City Council was launched in 2008. Amongst its tasks, it accompanies and strengthens citizen initiatives related to international cooperation and solidarity. The cooperation fostered by the Department has been characterized by contributing to an autosustained development, which promotes the right to freedom, to equality between men and women and in general, the commitment to the promotion and defence of human rights, through different instruments, such as grant calls, activities and actions of Education for Development.
