In Terrassa (co-capital of Vallès Occidental with 216,000 inhabitants) the Department of Solidarity and International Cooperation was born after NGOs camping in the city, like many other parts of the state, carried out in December of 1994 calling for 0,7% of the public revenues to destine them to solidarity and international cooperation. A percentage in 2003 would reach 1%, a figure that still remains despite the current economic crisis.

In the peace area, from the department, is put special emphasis on outreach in schools, both primary and secondary education, through various workshops and activities such as screening of documentary supplemented with lectures from subject matter experts.

However, Terrassa is part of the association of local governments “Majors for Peace,” of the “Coordinadora Catalana d’Ajuntaments Solidaris amb el Poble Saharaui”, and organizes annually each February the Month of Peace, with several actions to publicize the values of education for peace, solidarity, and respect for human rights.
