Vilanova i la Geltrú has always been committed to the Human Rights. In the year 2004, it formalised its adhesion to the European Charter for the Safeguarding of Human Rights.

Human Rights are universal and from the local government we work to contribute to their promotion enhancing policies which boost the values of liberty, solidarity, tolerance and the respect to diversity.

There is a long path in the promotion of Human Rights, promoted from the Department of Cooperation and Solidarity, from the joint work with the solidary and cooperation entities in the city.

Apart from giving support to projects of international cooperation from the creation of the Council of Cooperation of 1999, we work for the defence of peace and human rights.

The Local Cooperation Plan, designed along with the town entities has the general objective “to promote the human development at a global scale through the education and citizen participation in the building of social justice, a sustainable and human development and the eradication of poverty and inequalities”.

Cooperation at Vilanova I la Geltrú is centred in the promotion and defence of human rights in a global context through a pedagogic and awareness action, to highlight the injustices derived from the breaching of human rights in the world.

The Municipality is firmly committed in the promotion of activities and projects which help the development of third world countries and overall raise the awareness of the local population so as to build a more solidary society for the transformation of this new economic and political world which imbalances, especially, the poorer countries.
